Ella Henderson has opened up about her mental health struggles during lockdown and how the loss of her friend Caroline Flack has made her more focused on looking out for people.

Ella joined Callum Gallacher to chat about her new single Take Care of You but the chat quickly turned into the more serious subject of mental health when Callum brought up Ella's Instagram post from last month, where she opened up about having a rollercoaster of feelings throughout lockdown and urged her followers to reach out to the people they've been thinking of.

"It really did freak me out for a period of time" Ella said, speaking about lockdown "I'm just so grateful to have had my family around me because it's really actually been good for me to just take a bit of time and a step back from everything and focus on myself."

After having suffered from anxiety and panic attacks in the past, she's using lockdown to get into meditation to help her with her struggles.

As if the pandemic hasn't been hard enough on her, her year was already off to a rough start with the loss of Caroline Flack.

Speaking of the shock loss of her friend, she said "when that happened especially it really resonated with me and it just... my heart just sank. It makes you think of so many people and different people in my life. I've got certain friends where I know that they've been isolating on their own and it just made me think so much more about why it's so important to check in on the people that you love. Just because you're ok doesn't mean that they are."

Ella met Caroline Flack when she auditioned for X Factor back in 2012 while Caroline was hosting the Xtra Factor.
