So you’ve been chatting away for a while now, and you think it might be time for that first date… Although the conversation online has been flowing and you feel that connection, often the thought of meeting someone ‘face-to-face’ can be a little daunting.
We’ve put together a few do’s and don’ts to help combat those scary feelings and set you up for a great date!
DO keep an open mind--------------------
Remember, your date will probably be just as nervous as you are and sometimes when we’re nervous, charisma and charm may not flow so naturally. So if the conversation isn’t going as well as it did online don’t be disheartened, it will be a case of the first date jitters!
DO be confident---------------
Your confidence might be shaking in a corner somewhere, but smile and hold your head high. Your date will want to see the best in you, so show them how wonderful you are.
DO keep it short and sweet--------------------------
Diving head first into an intimate 3 course meal can put pressure on both parties, and questions of ‘who’s paying?’ ‘does she like the restaurant?’, ‘do I have food in my teeth?’ etc, can interrupt the first sparks of romance. Why not meet for a coffee and cake first? If you hit it off, then you have the second date to indulge in Hollywood romance, and if you don't, a café date is fairly non-committal.
DON'T scare them off…---------------------
Even if you really, really hit it off, the first date is not an appropriate time to ask whether you should have a buffet or sit down meal at your wedding, and whether or not the name Apple is too quirky for your future child!
DON'T rely too much on 'dutch courage'--------------------------------------
Yes, we are all much more attractive, interesting, and intelligent after that 3rd glass BUT falling over and being a bit on the lary side, is perhaps not the best first impression.
DO be safe----------
So it might take the spontaneous romance out of things but if you're meeting someone new, just let a friend know where you are. Although remember, if you end up eloping to Gretna, do let your friend know before they call out a search party.
