Dating can be scary, and it’s not just the ladies who get nervous. How do we know? We asked the men here Hallam FM Dating what their first date worries are...

1. What place should I suggest for the date?

This is a tricky one, and it often depends on what time of day your date is. If it's evening, should you go to a pub? Or a wine bar? Or a fancy restaurant? And if it's daytime, is a coffee shop OK or is that not fancy enough?

There can be a lot of pressure for the guy to pick somewhere that feels equally sophisticated yet relaxed. A good bet might be somewhere that does tapas or bitesize food, so you can share your love of food together!

2. Will we have enough to talk about?

Always a worry – although you can solve this to a certain degree by chatting online before you actually meet, you can never really know how you click with someone until you meet face-to-face.

To avoid those awkward moments, one of our guys suggested making a mental list of a few conversation topics before going on the date – then at least if silence ensues, you can start nattering about your childhood holidays!

3. Will she get my jokes?

Sense of humour is another one that is very hard to judge before the actual date! Men worry about this a surprising amount – after all, laughing at someone's jokes is a pretty sure sign that you like them.

So if you feel like having a giggle, go for it! Laughter does wonders for breaking the ice.

4. Have I judged the clothing situation correctly?

It can be tricky to gauge the dress code on a date. Is it a shirt-and-jeans kind of establishment? If you're coming straight from work, is a full-on suit a bit much?

What to wear is something that it seems women worry more about, but in reality, guys put a lot of thought into it too!

5. Do I have food in my teeth/on my face/on my clothes?

There is nothing worse than getting home after a date, looking in the mirror and finding you have a piece of spinach stuck between your front teeth!

Our men suggest checking your teeth in your phone camera before the date! And maybe pop a napkin on your lap if you're eating.

When it comes to dating, men can get just as nervous as women. But really, if you click with the person you're with, all of these other things won't matter a bit.

Think of it this way – if the person you're with when you're 70 is able to tell you nicely that you're smiling with spinach in your teeth, they could well be the perfect person for you!

Now go put those, ahem, doubts to bed. Love from everyone at Hallam FM Dating.
