There is a warning for drivers to leave extra time if getting the ferry at Cairnryan or travelling on the A77 this weekend.

The A77 is closed in both directions for essential maintenance at Shalloch Mill, south of Girvan.

The work starts at 7pm on Friday 18th November, and the route will not reopen until 6am on Monday 21st November 2022.

There will be a signed 30-mile diversion in place which will take drivers through Newton Stewart and Stranraer.

It is estimated that, based on free flow conditions and following the diversion route between Cairnryan and Girvan, diverted traffic will face an additional 30 minutes of travel time.

The diversion will operate as follows:

  • Southbound traffic will exit the A77 at Shallochpark Roundabout to join the A714.
  • From here, traffic will follow the route to Newton Stewart before joining the A75 westbound towards Stranraer.
  • Traffic will then turn right on to the A77 Stair Road and will continue in a northerly direction.
  • Northbound traffic will follow this route but in reverse.
The diversion route will see drivers take a lengthy diversion to rejoin the A77 - here, we have illustrated the ferry traffic journey to Cairnryan.

A spokesperson for Amey, who is carrying out the works, said: "This scheme, with a value of £222,229, will benefit around 4,073 vehicles using this route each day, by improving the condition of the carriageway and reducing the need for more extensive maintenance in the future.

"We thank road users for their patience and cooperation whilst these essential works take place."
