Arrests made after elderly woman has more than £1m stolen in scam

Police Scotland worked in partnership with the National Crime Squad and forces in the South of England

An elderly woman in South Lanarkshire had over one million pounds stolen in a scam over the summer

Six men and a woman have now been arrested and charged after a joint operation between Police Scotland and forces in the South of England

The arrests took place as part of an ongoing investigation into the massive fraud between May and August this year.

Police Scotland Officers were assisted by partners from the National Crime Agency’s National Economic Crime Centre and colleagues from other police forces. The arrests took place in Eastbourne, Stansted, Dagenham and East Ham in London.

The 34-year-old woman and four men aged 39, 39, 41 and 50 years are due to appear at Airdrie Sheriff Court on Monday, 18 December.

Two men aged 23 and 28 years have been released to appear at court at a later date.

The investigation into this high-value fraud continues.
