A Kilmarnock dad and daughter are taking on the 10k Roon the Toon walk today to raise money for a new standing wheelchair for her.

Paul Montgomery and his daughter Faith, who has cerebral palsy, have been walking together since lockdown, and they're working towards getting the new chair in time for her 18th birthday.

The new chair would allow Faith to see herself standing up for the first time.

The pair are hoping to raise funds for the chair in time for her 18th birthday

Paul said: “Her wish for her 18th birthday was to see what she looked like in a nice dress stood up, so that really pulled on my heartstrings.

“It’s going to be absolutely massive for her physically obviously, getting the opportunity to be upright, great for her bones, great for her muscle, great for her posture, but just mentally as well, it’s going to be absolutely huge for her.”

Paul says they couldn't have done it without the support from their community who stepped up to help the family make their fundraising goals.

He added: “There’s some people who we don’t know who’ve contributed massively towards the fundraising, and are putting on their own events, and doing their own kind of raffles, and doing the run itself tomorrow, so that’s been incredible really.

“It’s just a lovely thing to know there’s people out there who really care about Faith’s wellbeing.”

Roon the Toon sets off from Ayrshire Athletics Arena at 10am, and is organised by the Ayrshire Hospice.

Paul and Faith are accepting donations to their GoFundMe here.
