Glasgow man jailed after threatening school boys with knife

A man who threatened six school boys with a knife and demanded their mobile phones has been jailed for four and a half years.

30-year old Jahanzaibe Butt from Glasgow targeted five boys as they walked home from school in the Pollokshields area of the city on 3rd September last year.

He attacked his sixth victim on 10th September 10 2018.

Butt, who is assessed as a high risk of re-offending, robbed four of his victims – who were aged 13, 13, 14 and 15 – of their mobile phone, and attempted to rob an 11-year-old and a 13-year-old.

At the High Court in Glasgow judge Lady Scott told Butt: "All these boys were left shocked, frightened or distressed. They were six vulnerable children."

The court heard that Butt has 14 previous convictions, including a number for assault and robbery, all involving the use of a knife.

Lady Scott ordered him to be on licence for two years after his release from jail.

As he was led away to the cells Butt shouted: "I'm not serving any of it."

Lady Scott told him: "That's all."

The court heard that Butt approached his first two victims, brothers aged 15 and 11, around 3.30pm on September 3, last year, in James Gray Street, Glasgow.

Butt told the 15-year-old and said: "Give me your phone. I need to call someone for an emergency."

Prosecutor Duncan McPhie said: "The accused was in possession of a knife which he presented at the schoolboy The boy immediately took his mobile phone out of his pocket fearing for his and his brother's safety."

Butt demanded a phone from the 11-year-old, but he said he did not have one and the accused left.

Shortly after in Langside Avenue, Glasgow, he threatened two 13-year-olds at knifepoint and robbed one of them of his mobile phone and attempted to rob the other.

At 4.15pm Butt targeted a 14-year-old boy. Butt produced a knife and told his victim: "Give me your phone," and then shouted: "Give me the pin or I'll cut you."

The 14-year-old handed over his phone.

Butt's sixth victim was attacked in Terregles Avenue and Springkell Avenue, Glasgow, on September 10, last year.

Butt told him: "Gimme your phone," and then said he would "stab" or "stick" him.

He grabbed the boy's mobile and his iphone headphones and cycled off.

Solicitor advocate Gerry Considine, defending, said: "He is remorseful. This must have been a terrifying ordeal for all those involved."
