A Scottish athlete’s left a man permanently scarred after attacking him with a golf club.

22-year old runner Ross Gray from Port Glasgow hit 25-year old Darren Foy with so much force over the head, the club snapped in two.

Mr Foy required stitches and staples following the attack, which took place near to a Five Guy’s restaurant in Glasgow city centre in the early hours of the morning on May 10 last year.

Co-accused 19-year old Kieran McIntyre also attacked Mr Foy by punching and kicking him.

Gray pleaded guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court to assaulting Mr Foy and permanent disfigurement.

McIntyre also admitted assaulting him.

Gray and McIntyre were driving to Glasgow city centre and got into an altercation with Mr Foy who was waiting to cross the road.

Mr Foy smashed the rear window of McIntyre’s car and dented a door following an exchange of words.

Gray pulled up behind McIntyre’s car and took a golf club from the boot.

Prosecutor Derek Buchanan said: "Gray struck Mr Foy multiple times to his head and body eventually causing the golf club to break in two.

"McIntyre kicked and punched Foy on the body while he was being struck with the golf club."

The attack only came to an end when members of the public intervened.

The pair, who have no previous convictions, were later arrested by police.

Gray told them: "It was defence against him attacking me."

Mr Buchanan added: "Medical experts say the injuries to Mr Foy will result in permanent scarring.

"He received a £300 fiscal fine for vandalism and assault."

Sentence was deferred on both men until next month by Sheriff Martin Jones QC for background reports.

They were remanded in custody.
