The University of Glasgow has increased security around the campus following a rape and three other alleged sexual assaults in the west end of the city.

Two women were allegedly sexually assaulted on 17th October - one took place on Lawrence Street in Partick and the other at Napiershall Street in Woodside.

One week later on 24th October, another women was sexually assaulted on Cranworth Street in Hillhead.

A 34-year old man has been arrested and charged in connection with the three alleged attacks.

The following week on 31st October, a 20-year old women was raped in Sutherland Lane next to the university's campus.

The incident is not believed to be linked to the previous three attacks.

Glasgow University has since released a warning to students and staff and say it's increased security around the campus.

In the statement it says the campus now has improved the lighting and increased security patrols.

A Police spokesperson said: "We can confirm that enquiries are ongoing following a report of the serious sexual assault of a 20-year-old woman in Sutherland Lane, near University Place, Hillhead, in the early hours of Thursday 31 October 2019.

Detective Inspector Suzanne McNulty of the Public Protection Unit in Govan said:

"Officers in Glasgow carried out enquiries following reports that three women had been the victim of sexual assaults in the West End between 17 and 31 October.

"Extensive enquires were ongoing into these incidents which were linked following information which came to light following the third attack.

"A 34-year-old man was arrested on the 2, November and has now been charged in connection with all three of these incidents. He is due to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court today, Thursday, 21 November, 2019.

"In every serious crime reported to police, officers carefully consider whether or not it is appropriate to proactively make the circumstances public.

"This is continually assessed throughout the investigation to ensure the safety of victims and the wider public is protected.

"We will continue to liaise with Glasgow University and the surrounding communities as part of our continued investigations into this."
