People in Glasgow are to get their say on whether or not 160 flats should be built next to Ibrox Stadium.

A public consultation's been launched by housing developer Merchant Homes, to transform the Albion Car Park at the junction of Broomloan Road and Edmiston Drive.

Images released by the company show two horseshoe blocks of flats with “red hues” to match “the iconic Ibrox Main Stand”.

“Our ambition for the Albion site is to create a residential development that is both sympathetic to and celebratory of, the history of the area,” the developer adds.

“The site has gone through a number of iterations over the years including former uses as a greyhound stadium, and training ground.

“The historical and current association with sports on the site is something we are keen to express in our design for the new development.”

A Proposal of Application notice was submitted to Glasgow City Council on March 17 outlining Merchant Homes’ ambition to develop the site.

The company now wants to hear feedback from members of the public to inform the final proposal before it is sent to the council.

It has launched the consultation on its website where interested parties can find a feedback form and contact details.

A public consultation event had been planned for Friday, May 29 but has been cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The developer will hold a live question and answer session on that date instead – between 1pm and 4pm.

The proposals states the site was used as a greyhound track until the 1960s when it was purchased by Rangers and redeveloped as their training ground.

It became a match day car park when Ibrox Stadium was redeveloped in the 1980s.
