Long-serving Glasgow Labour councillor has died

A long-serving Labour councillor and former Glasgow MSP has died at the age of 67.
The city’s Labour group has announced the passing of Cllr Hanzala Malik, who was first elected to represent Hillhead in 1995.
Cllr George Redmond, Glasgow Labour leader, said the city has “lost a loyal servant to its people”. The group paid tribute to his “unwavering dedication” to the Hillhead ward and said his work “championing equality and social justice” had inspired many.
Cllr Malik represented Hillhead on Glasgow City Council from 1995 until 2012 and was elected as Labour MSP for the Glasgow region in 2011. He was re-elected as a councillor in May 2017.

The Labour group said his legacy of tireless advocacy and genuine compassion will continue to influence its efforts, adding he will be “dearly missed and his memory will remain a guiding light in our pursuit of a fairer and more equitable society”.
Cllr Redmond said: “Hanzala was a good friend and colleague for almost 25 years working with him closely in the role of political head of Glasgow’s economic renewal.
“Hanzala was a gentleman and always had time for people, passing on practical and sensible advice and making you feel special. He gave great service to Glasgow for almost 30 years as a councillor and as a member of the Scottish Parliament.
“My thoughts and prayers go to his family at this sad time. Glasgow has lost a loyal servant to its people.”
He will be "dearly missed"
Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar said: “My thoughts are with Hanzala’s wife, children and grandchildren. Cllr Malik was a champion for his community and an important voice for equality both in the city chambers, and previously as an MSP for Glasgow.
“His family and council colleagues have lost a true friend — he will be sorely missed.”
Glasgow Labour’s deputy leader, Cllr Soryia Siddique, said she was “shocked and saddened at the sudden passing away” of her friend and colleague.
“I will miss his wisdom and friendship,” she added. “He was a family man who worked tirelessly for the community. The Labour Group has lost a valued member. Condolences to Hanzala’s family and friends.”
