Commuters were forced to dig themselves out of their streets this morning as we got our first serious snowfall of the winter.

A multiple crash blocked the M8 westbound at Junction 6 for Newhouse and part of the part of the M74 overnight, with some motorists reporting on social media that they were stranded for several hours.

Police said it was shut between junctions 14 and 15 northbound for a time overnight, but was passable with care on Tuesday morning.

Clyde 2 breakfast show presenter Ewen Cameron found himself stranded at home in Falkirk, unable to get his car out of his street.

"I was one of the first to try to get out of the estate and then as the morning went on more people were getting up to go to work and none of us could get out so we grabbed shovels and dug a track."

"We cleared a path up the hill and then we had to get grit and spread it either side to try and get our cars moving.

"It took about an hour and a half but we eventually got there."

The Met Office has issued yellow warnings of snow and ice for most of the country and an ice warning for the north-east, which are valid until 11am.

It warns that snow and ice may cause disruption, with snow likely on higher ground.

One motorist tweeted that she was stranded for four and a half hours on the road while another reported that he was stuck for an hour.

Traffic Scotland said there were very snowy conditions across the trunk network on Tuesday and advised people to drive with care.

Police in southern Scotland advised people to leave extra time for their journey and drive according to the conditions.
