Detectives are appealing for witnesses after an elderly woman was robbed in the Newarthill area on Wednesday, 1 November, 2023.

The 82-year-old woman, who was wearing a purple puffer jacket, had been travelling from Motherwell on the number 254 bus and got off in High Street, Newarthill, around 12.30pm.

She walked down Church Street and was near to the junction of Kirkoswald Road when she was approached from behind by a man who was unknown to her.

The man grabbed a cream handbag and brown paper Primark bag the woman had been carrying and ran off along Kirkoswald Road.

The suspect is described white, 5ft8, late 20’s, with short dark hair. He was wearing a beige jumper and blue jeans.

The victim was not injured during the incident.

Detective Constable Alison Geal from Wishaw CID said: “This was a despicable and opportunistic robbery which left an elderly woman distressed and badly shaken.

“It is vital that we trace the man responsible and I am appealing for anyone who was in the area at the time and saw anything at all suspicious to please come forward.

“I would particularly urge motorists with dash-cams to check their footage in case they have captured the victim, suspect, or even the incident taking place.

“Anyone with information is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting incident number 1733 of Wednesday, 1 November, 2023. Alternatively you can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
