Police are treating the death of a man in Dalry last night as suspicious.

Around 9.05pm on Sunday 10th October, the 23-year-old man was walking along St Margaret's Avenue when he was attacked by a man who is only described as being white and wearing a dark jacket.

Paramedics arrived on scene, but couldn't save the man.

"This young man would appear to have been attacked and killed for absolutely no reason"

Detective Inspector Stephen McCulloch, Saltcoats CID, is leading the investigation. He said: "This young man would appear to have been attacked and killed for absolutely no reason other than being in the same place as the man at the same time.

"There were a number of people in the street who came to the man's aid and called for an ambulance and we believe we have managed to speak to most of them, however we would still appeal to anyone who was there but who has not yet come forward to police to get in touch.

"I'd also ask for motorists who may have dash-cams to check their footage from the street around the area, maybe between 8.50 pm and 9.10 pm, and to call police as well.

“Information can be passed to officers at Saltcoats Police Station via 101 quoting reference number 3404 of Sunday, 10 October 2021. Alternatively, please call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 where details can be given in confidence.”

Police were keen to stress the incident is not related to the death of a man on St Margaret's Avenue the following day.

Detective Constable Ross Keenan said: "Peden Avenue at St Margaret's Avenue is residential and I am sure people there, especially at this time of the night, would have either seen or heard the attack.

"If you have any information you feel may assist officers with their enquiries, please call Saltcoats Police Station via 101 quoting reference number 3322 of Saturday, 9 October, 2021.
