Fire crews have fought to save the well-known Popinjay Hotel in Rosebank in Lanarkshire after a blaze broke out at breakfast time.

Scottish Fire and Rescue confirmed they received a call to the hotel, at 7.18am, and the A72 road has been closed to traffic at the scene.

Guests and staff were evacuated as ten fire engines and a height vehicle went to the scene.

There were no reports of any injuries.

In a post on social media, hotel staff said: "Fire incident at Popinjay Hotel this morning, we are able to let everyone know full evacuation of all staff and guests completed quickly without injury to anyone."

They said the property is in the hands of the fire service for investigation.

Swimming pool and gym

Pictures suggest the fire has mainly affected the rear of the building with a substantial part of the roof destroyed.

Clyde 1 News reporter Callum McQuade is at the scene and told us: "The smell of smoke got stronger and stronger as I was driving towards the village."

"One firefighter has told me unofficially they believe the fire began in the swimming pool area."

Local landmark

The 34-room hotel and spa is a well-known local landmark,

It was originally built by Lord Newlands in 1882 near the supposed site of the popinjay archery contest featured in Walter Scott's novel Old Mortality.
