Scottish restrictions decision today - what's happening around the UK?

The Scottish cabinet's meeting this morning to decide whether more restrictions need to be brought in after Christmas to help tackle the spread of Omicron.

Last night, the First Minister ruled out changing the guidance around meeting family and friends in the run up to Christmas Day.

But Nicola Sturgeon says the fact funding for business is only triggered when England takes similar action, is still a big sticking point, and that argument is being supported by a new report from economists calling for the devolved nations to be able to bring in their own furlough schemes, if needed.

Here’s how the rules stand in other parts of the UK:

Wales

• From December 26, all sporting events will be played behind closed doors

• Nightclubs will be closed from December 27

• £3 million Spectator Sports Fund will be available to support clubs and sporting venues

• £60 million fund to support any businesses affected by the restrictions.

England

• Boris Johnson says the Government will "reserve the possibility" of implementing new restrictions.

• Covid passes rewquired for entry into nightclubs and indoor events with 500+ and outdoors 10,000+

• Face coverings have also been made compulsory in most indoor public settings

Nothern Ireland

• "Scenario planning is underway to develop a package of potential measures"

• Indoor gatherings should have no more than 30 people present

• Scheme to prove Covid-free status for event entry to be made mandatory

• Executive will meet this week to review the data and consider next steps.
