Kirk Broadfoot claims he paid his own transfer fee to allow him to rejoin Kilmarnock from St Mirren.

The 35-year-old has moved back to Rugby Park five months after leaving when he fell out with now departed boss Angelo Alessio, who was replaced by Alex Dyer in December.

St Mirren announced they had received an undisclosed fee for the former Rangers and Scotland defender and Broadfoot claimed it came from his own pocket.

He told Killie TV: "Kilmarnock made an approach, St Mirren wouldn't let me go. It went back and forth and I decided to pay the fee to get me here.

"That's how much I wanted to come back and work with Alex and play for the club again.

"I'm buzzing. I really enjoyed my time here, I said that when I left. It was probably just a clash of two personalities and that was the reason why I left. I never wanted to and I'm delighted to be back.''

St Mirren manager Jim Goodwin knew nothing of the fee but admitted he had been angry and then disappointed after Broadfoot sought a move.

"This is one of the most bizarre ones I have been involved in,'' Goodwin told BBC Radio Scotland.

"It came completely out of the blue and really caught us all by surprise.

"I got a phone call on Wednesday afternoon from Kirk saying he believes there is an interest from Kilmarnock to take him back. To say I was shocked was an understatement and I was angry at the time as well.

"I said to Broaders I hadn't planned to lose a centre-half.

"Unfortunately when an experienced player makes his mind up, we were kind of backed into a corner.''

Goodwin added: "I am really disappointed that it has come to it because not only are we losing a very experienced, good central defender, but I am also strengthening one of my opponents.

"I could have dug my heels in and made Broaders stay but the last thing I want at the club is people who don't want to be here.

"I certainly don't want an experienced player in the dressing room who is not in the right frame of mind.

"I was angry on Wednesday, I really was. I was hurt. It was just a real shock.''
