Rangers insist no contact has been made by Aston Villa over Steven Gerrard despite reports linking him with a move to the Midlands side.

The 41-year old is the front-runner to take over at Villa Park after Dean Smith was sacked at the weekend.

Chief executive Christian Purslow has previously worked with Gerrard at Liverpool and is believed to be keen on making a quick appointment.

The Ibrox boss has been tipped to be one of their top targets along with Belgium manager Roberto Martinez.

Denmark's Kasper Hjulmand has also been rumoured along with Southampton's Ralph Hassenhuttl and Brighton's Graham Potter.

However, according to reports, Rangers say they've had no contact so far from the English Premier League outfit.
