Rangers have withdrawn from the controversial Sydney Super Cup tournament later this year.

The Ibrox side were due to head to Australia in November to take part in the four-team tournament, where the first overseas Old Firm derby against Celtic was planned.

However, the club have now terminated their agreement after claiming the organisers "were unwilling to fulfil their commitments".

Rangers fan groups protested against the tournament at recent matches, including throwing tennis balls and toilet paper on to the pitch at Dens Park in a recent match against Dundee.

The club now look set to miss out on a seven figure windfall they were believed to be getting for taking part in the tournament.

Marketing chief James Bisgrove said involvement in the competition was worth more money than winning the Premiership title would be.

A club statement read: "Rangers can confirm the Club will not be participating in the Sydney Super Cup in November 2022.

"After it became clear the tournament organisers were unwilling to fulfil their commitments to Rangers, we have, with immediate effect, terminated the Club’s agreement with the organisers."
