Rangers midfielder Steven Davis says he understands why there would be interest from Aston Villa in Steven Gerrard.

The Ibrox boss is the front-runner to take over at Villa Park - with reports suggesting Gerrard is also keen on the role.

The English Premier League side are on the hunt for a new manager after sacking Dean Smith at the weekend.

Various names have been mentioned, however, Gerrard appears to be the number one choice for chief executive Christian Purslow.

Purslow was managing director of Liverpool while the former England captiain played at Anfield.

The Daily Telegraph report talks are set to take place with Villa ready to make an official approach to Rangers.

Veteran midfielder Steven Davis was questioned about the links while on international duty with Northern Ireland

He told Sky Sports: "Unfortunately in football there are always going to be links if you're doing a good job.

"He is certainly doing a fantastic job at the club and I've got a great relationship with him."
