An eyewitness has told of the shocking moment a baby fell from a moving car just outside Portadown.

Speaking to Downtown & Cool FM, he said he thought initially it was a doll but then realised it was a child.

“I saw the back door of the vehicle open and the child had fallen out and lying on the middle of the road,” he said.

“It was pure shock – it was a very very surreal – it is something you maybe would see in a film or on TV but not on the back road to Lurgan.”

The incident happened shortly after 6.30 on Wednesday evening in the Drumgor area of Craigavon.

The child, believed to be a year old, was taken to hospital for a bruised head but otherwise appeared fine.

The eyewitness said it was a miracle she was not badly injured.

“It could have been ten times worse – from what I can gather, the girl in the vehicle behind had to swerve to avoid the child,” he said.

“If another vehicle would have come on the scene at any speed there would be every possibility it could have run over the child.”

The PSNI said inquiries were ongoing.
