The ‘Biscuits’ singer was speaking to DTC’s Stuart Banford ahead of her trip to Dublin in March.

She headlines the C2C Country music festival in the 3Arena from March 9-11.

She said although she is looking forward to the challenge, headlining a major festival is a daunting prospect:

“It’s a different kind of challenge being a headliner and I’m up for it.

“I think it’ll be incredible energy, the crowds over there always blow my mind, I’m really looking forward to it.”

Kacey said she is delighted at the growth of country music in Ireland and the audience here has helped inspire some of her new material:

“It’s pretty cool to see how much Americana and country have exploded over there.

“I think it’s ultimately a testament to how much you guys love songwriters and you know the craft of song you really respect.”

“I just felt like real frustrated, I just wasn’t really sure what I wanted to do or what I wanted my next project to sound like coz I felt like, though I love country music, I had gone really far in that direction with pageant material and you can’t make a more Western record with that.

“I just never want to repeat myself, I’ll never want to do the same thing twice so I knew I had to change it up and though I love that I did the first two albums with Shane and Luke it was time to change it up.”

Recently married and with a host of new music, the singer said she took the opportunity to record her new album in Sheryl Crow’s home studio, a horse stable complete with Guinness on tap:

“It’s a pretty magical place,” she said.

“Sheryl was kind enough to let us use her home studio, her personal space.

“We got to set up shop there for a while and kind of make it home and it’s on a bunch of land surrounded by beautiful trees and she would swing by every now and then while we were recording and have a Guinness with us and have a chat.

“It was a really great experience.

According to Kacey, her new material was inspired by recent personal experiences:

“Sometimes there are certain junctures in your life you can’t think you’re way through you kind of have to feel and this album was one of them,” she said.

She opened up to Stuart Banford about one of her favourite projects to date- a Johnny Cash tribute album which she features on alongside her new husband Ruston Kelly.

“This Johnny Cash project is called ‘Forever Words,’ it’s coming out soon, it’s really unique,” she said.

“Johnny Cash’s son Jon has taken a bunch of his dad’s unused poems and unheard lyrics… and asked different artists of different kinds to put music to them and make them into a song that’s never been heard before.

“So Ruston and I got to work together and this is our first project together which it’s very special.

“It’s a poem written by Johnny to June in 1970 when she was… eight months pregnant and it’s just a really sweet sentiment, a side of Johnny that people didn’t really get to see.”
