As the festive season comes around once again, dog shelters are reminding would-be owners to “adopt, don’t shop”.

New puppies may be top of the Christmas list for many children this year, but one of Northern Ireland's leading animal shelters is appealing to families to consider adoption instead.

From Pomeranian pooches to energetic Jack Russell's, these are the nine strays of Christmas looking for love this year

These furry friends only have one Santa wish: to find themselves a loving forever home.

Assisi Animal Sanctuary is Northern Ireland’s largest independent animal welfare charity providing shelter for up to 200 companion animals – cats, dogs and rabbits.

Red

Assisi Animal Sanctuary

This is Red! Red is a active boy, who loves nothing more than a game of fetch, and would make a fabulous hiking companion. He ignores other dogs on walks, however wouldn’t be suited to living with other pets. Red was originally brought to the sanctuary in June 2017. He will need an experienced owner to help him deal with some behavioural issues.

Teddy

Assisi Animal Sanctuary

This is Teddy! Teddy is a four year old pomeranian cross. Teddy is an active boy who loves exploring on walks. He will need an experienced owner as he is a nervous dog with some behavioural issues. He wouldn’t be suitable to live with children or other animals.

Jack

Assisi Animal Sanctuary

Hi i’m Jack! I am a six year old jack russell terrier. I have been at the sanctuary now for a number of months and I am still looking for my forever home. I would need an experienced owner to work on my behavioural issues. I wouldn’t be suitable to live with children or cats unfortunately. However I could potentially live with another settled dog. If you are interested please call up to the sanctuary and fill out an application form!

Tia

Assisi Animal Sanctuary

Hi my name is Tia and I am an eight year old rottweiler. I am a slightly older girl who has had a rough life in a puppy farm. I came into Assisi in a very poor condition with open wounds and infections. I have received lots of treatment since then and I am doing very well, I am super girl friendly and need a home where I can lie around and be fussed over. I could only live with older teenagers and potentially older settled dogs, but sadly not cats. If you have large breed experience and can give me the settled home that I need please come down to the sanctuary and ask the staff about me.

Sasha

Assisi Animal Sanctuary

Hi my name is Sasha and I am a three year old husky mix. I am a very energetic and bouncy girl who will need a home with experience with large and energetic breeds. I can be timid at first but I just need a chance to get to know new people. I would prefer to be the only dog in the home and I cannot live with cats. I could live with older experienced teenagers as I am too bouncy for young children. If you feel you can offer me the home I need please come down to the sanctuary and speak to the staff about me.

Rebel

Assisi Animal Sanctuary

Hi there! My name is Rebel and I am ten years old, I am seeking a new home to call my own! Although I am an older boy I still love my walks and playing with toys. I could love another dog but no cats please as I may chase them! I could live with teenagers. I am seeking an owner who has lots of time to spend with me. I am an affectionate boy and love being around people! If you feel you could offer me a loving home, please come down to the sanctuary. Love from Rebel.

Barney

Assisi Animal Sanctuary

Hi there! My name is Barney and I am around four years old, I am a Pomeranian cross. I am seeking a new home to call my own and an experienced owner with no children or other pets! I will need work on my basic training and an understanding and committed owner. I am an active boy and love my walks! I enjoy playing with toys and human attention on my own terms. If you feel you could offer me a new home, please call up and meet me. Love from Barney.

Vern

Assisi Animal Sanctuary

Hello! My name is Vern. I am an older gent at around eleven years old, although I’m not sure exactly. I just love to sunbathe, my other hobbies include, swimming and running along the beach, eating, playing with the staff here and watching the goings on at the sanctuary. I love toys especially the squeaky ones that I can shred! I can be a bit grumpy sometimes and I have had a few different homes over the years. I realise now that I have not shown myself off very well in those homes but I am ready for another try for a forever home. I would love to meet an owner who understands me and is able to give me my space. I would also love to be the only pet in the home. I just love my own cosy bed but I don’t like it when others come near it as it is mine! Do you have room in your home and heart for an old guy like me? If you do please call up to the sanctuary and meet me! You can also chat to the staff here and they will tell you all about me. That’s all for now, lots of love

Percy

Assisi Animal Sanctuary

I am seeking an experienced owner who has lots of time to spend with me as I do need some work on my manners. I am seeking an adult only home. I could live with another active dog like me, I just love to play with other dogs! I am finding kennel life quite stressful so I would love to find my forever home soon! If you feel you could offer me a loving home, please come down to the sanctuary and meet me! Lots of love from Percy!
