A man in his 40s has been stabbed after a petrol bomb was thrown at the property he was in in the early hours of Wednesday morning in Downpatrick.

It happened just before 2 o'clock in the St John's Mews area.

It is also believed the man and a woman in the property had petrol thrown over them and an attempt was made to set them alight.

The victims' injuries are not believed to be life-threatening - the suspect fled the scene.

A PSNI spokesperson said: “Colleagues from the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service also attended the scene as a precaution. A number of residents were evacuated whilst officers made the building safe.

“We are appealing to any witnesses, or anyone who might have any information which could assist us with our enquiries, to get in touch.
