Mencap’s Segal House Nursery offers specialist pre-school care and support for the educational development of children aged up to 5 years old. They provide a therapeutic environment for children who suffer from a range of disabilities to learn and play in. They also help them to develop important skills for the future.

Two percent of the population in Northern Ireland are born with a learning disability, of which 15% will have profound and multiple disabilities and will require specialist care. In Northern Ireland there are approximately 8,160 children with a learning disability. Pre school children with a learning disability rarely have access to mainstream nursery facilities as they lack the necessary resources required to facilitate the integration and needs of these children. Mencap have addressed this issue by providing a specialist nursery enabling necessary pre-school development for children with a learning disability and support for their parents and families.

Due to the number of children with complex needs attending the nursery, seating is posing difficulties, as there are insufficient specialised chairs for the children. The grant received by Cash for Kids will be put towards a specialized contoured chair. This will enable children to sit up straight and independently. It will also provide an area in which staff can develop their “Fine Motor Skills”.
