Honouring the best achievements in film and television throughout 2014, the 21st annual Screen Actors Guild Awards took place at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles last night.

Hotly tipped for Oscars glory next month, Birdman scooped the biggest award of the night – Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture.

British actor Eddie Redmayne also triumphed taking home the Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role for his performance as Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything.

Speaking about Hawking’s illness, Eddie told the audience: "I would like to dedicate this award to those people around the world living with ALS, to those who have lost their lives to this brutal disease.

"In preparing to play Stephen I met many people fighting ALS, and I met their families fighting alongside them. And the courage and the bravery and the spirit, this triumph of spirit that I witnessed, blew my mind. So I'm incredibly grateful to them."

Other winners across film and television included Julianne Moore, J.K. Simmons, Patricia Arquette, Downton Abbey, Kevin Spacey and Game of Thrones.
