Coronation Street viewers criticise show for 'unrealistic' birth scene

Leanne Battersby gave birth in a lift

Coronation Street viewers witnessed a new arrival on the famous cobbles last night when Leanne Battersby welcomed her first biological child into the world, but fans had something to say about the birth scene.

As soaps never seem to have 'normal' births, fans were expecting something out of the ordinary and the show certainly didn't disappoint.

Leanne found herself going into labour whilst trapped in a lift with her sister Toyah, and just moments later she gave birth to her newborn.

After the dramatic scenes, fans were quick to point out how 'quick' the birth was and asked why the newborn baby was so 'big'.

Of course, it's only a TV show and not real life and it would be completely impractical for Coronation Street to use a one day old baby for the scene. But this didn't stop viewers taking to Twitter to criticise the show....

It's only a soap! 🙈

In other Coronation Street news, fans were left delighted as bosses revealed the soap will air six nights per week starting this autumn.

As well as this, reports are suggesting the Coronation Street set will be extended, with two new streets in the planning.

The extension will allow bosses to bring more businesses into the soap including a police station, a school and a court.

Executive Producer Kieran Roberts explained the additional shows and bigger set will allow for expansion of characters who don't always get the most screen time.

He said, "The street will open up a whole range of new possibilities for the writers to work with. It’s inevitable that a whole new street of homes will bring new families and drama with it.”
