Man arrested following Co Louth crash that killed three people from NI
A man in his 20's is being questioned by gardai
A man in his 20s has been arrested in connection with a crash that claimed the lives of a mother and son and a young footballer.
The three victims, all from Northern Ireland, died in the crash just across the Irish border in Co Louth in the early hours of Saturday.
They have been named locally as Mary Faxton, who was in her 80s, and her son Kevin Faxton, who was in his 50s, and Bryan Magill, who was in his 20s.
The two older victims were both occupants in one of the cars involved in the collision on the N1 at Carrickcarnan at about 2.15am on Saturday.
The younger man was travelling in the other car. Another man in his 20s, who sustained non-life threatening injuries in the crash, was also in that car.
The man arrested in connection with the crash on Sunday was detained at Dundalk Garda station.
Mr Magill was from Newry and the Faxtons from the nearby Co Armagh village of Bessbrook.
Archview United FC in Newry posted a tribute to Mr Magill, who played for the team.
"All at the club are heartbroken by the untimely death of one of our top men Bryan (bru) Magill!!!,'' it stated.
"Bru will always be remembered by all of us as a gentleman!!!
"Sleep easy our kid!!! Shout at us from above!!!''
Newry Celtic Football Club also paid tribute.
"Everyone at Newry Celtic are deeply saddened by the tragic death of our former player and friend Bryan 'Bru' Magill,'' it stated.
"The club would like to extend their deepest sympathies to his family at this devastating loss.''
