Rory McIlroy has defended his decision to play a round of golf with the President of the United States in Palm Beach, Florida.

The four-time major champion played 18 holes with Donald Trump last weekend, prompting a flood of online criticism.

The Holywood golfer has released a statement on Twitter explaining his decision;

The four-time major winner has not played competitively since suffering a stress fracture to his ribs during the South African Open where he lost in a play-off to Graeme Storm.

Rory is currently living in Florida with his American fiancée Erica Stroll and is aiming to make his comeback at the up and coming WGC-Mexico Championship.
