In the end, it was simply a putt too far ...

And after another day of intense drama at the 148th Open, big home favourite, Rory McIlroy waved goodbye to Royal Portrush.

The World Number Three came agonisingly close - just one shot shy - to producing one of the greatest-ever comebacks in a Major.

In golf, the margins are finer than most. and McIlroy paid the price for a disastrous first day when absolutely nothing went right.

Last night's superb 65 was a mere consolation.

A similar scoreline on Day One would have put him way out in front going into the second half of the week.

Instead, he was heading home to Florida, having missed the +1 cut.

Afterwards, a disconsolate and emotional McIlroy fought back tears as he thanked the fans for pushing him all the way - and almost making an impossible dream come true.

"I'm disappointed not to be back for the weekend - unbelievably proud of how I handled myself today coming back after what was a very challenging day yesterday and I am full of gratitude towards every single one of the people who followed me right to the end," he said.

There was also disappointment for Portrush resident Darren Clarke who also failed to make the cut while home-grown Graeme McDowell secured his place with a +1 finish.

Three-time champion Tiger Woods complained of soreness in his back as he finished on six over par.

Other big names who are going home include Phil Mickelson and Ian Poulter.

But Shane Lowry goes marching on along with American J B Holmes and English duo Tommy Fleetwood and Lee Westwood.

Open champion, Francesco Molinari also lives to fight another day.
