Golf's most prestigious tournaments and one of the great sporting spectacles, the Masters, begins tomorrow (Thursday) at Augusta.

And among the big favourites again is Holywood star, Rory McIlroy.

It's a competition that has always proved elusive to the world's number nine ranked player.

If he wins, though, it will mean he joins an elite group who have achieved a career grand slam.

Despite missing the cut in his last tournament - the Texas Open - McIlroy believes he is well prepared for what Augusta has in store.

"Look, I know if I play well I will give my chances to win this golf tournament and it's just a matter of going out there and executing the way you know you can and stick to your game plan and be disciplined and all the things you need to do around the Augusta National," he said.

McIlroy is in the last group teeing off along with Brooks Koepka and Matthew Fitzpatrick.

Meanwhile, Tiger Woods said he would make a final decision after today's par 3 contest whether he lines up tomorrow.

The five-time champion has been drawn in the same group as Joaquin Niemann and Louis Oosthuizen.

It would be a remarkable comeback from Woods given he suffered serious injuries in a car crash in February last year.
