Rory McIlroy came close to picking up a second US Open title and a first Major in eight years last night (Sunday) at Brookline.

But the World Number 3 had to settle for a share of fifth place after finishing -2 - four shots behind England's Matt Fitzpatrick who was picking up his first-ever Major.

It was the Holywood star's fourth consecutive top-10 finish at the US Open and followed a runner-up finish at The Masters and eighth-place at the PGA Championship.

Going into the final day McIlroy felt he was just one great round from claiming a fifth major title and first since 2014 following a battling 73 on Saturday.

However, he mixed four birdies and four bogeys in his first 14 holes and eventually signed for a 69.

McIlroy said afterwards that it was another missed opportunity but that he was positive going forward.

Next up for him is the Travelers Championship, before he takes two weeks off ahead of teeing it up in The 150th Open at St Andrews next month.
