Dougie Poynter has reportedly landed a big film role in the upcoming independent British film, The Academy.

This new superhero film will see the McFly bassist play the lead role, a character called Hale, next to Brian Bovell from The Missing.

According to a national newspaper Dougie had been taking acting lessons in Los Angeles and auditioning for a variety of parts when he got lucky.

The national newspaper has quoted a source explaining Dougie's character saying, “His character is focal to the storyline as he ends up being captured in a big plot twist.”

The film will be set in a new superhero universe in a university.

Dougie was reportedly encouraged to try out acting by his former girlfriend singer Ellie Goulding and this will be the second lead acting role he has starred in, the first being in a comedy Kat And The Band which is currently in production.

Despite trying out acting the 29-year-old bassist is still expected to return to the studio with McFly next year.
