Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield have found themselves under fire from angry viewers after they slammed a guest for claiming women without children should also be allowed maternity leave.

Phillip didn’t hold back his thoughts about author, Meghann Foye, who joined the pair via satellite link from New York on This Morning.

Meghann was on the show to discuss her new book ‘Meternity’ and claimed there should be a concept similar to maternity leave for single people who are feeling stressed and tired at work.

She said “Sometimes when you’re single you can get really burned out, and there’s no way to ask for time off.”

Clearly shocked by her statement, Phillip fired back slamming her comments. The presenter accused her of ‘pandering to a bunch of tree huggers’ before asking “Can’t you do that at weekend? This isn’t how life works!”

Proud mum-of-three Holly initially claimed she was understood where Meghann was coming from but revealed it should not be compared to maternity leave, saying “It’s quite dangerous. I think it’s a slightly irresponsible thing to do.”

After coming under fire from the popular presenters, the American author insisted it was a ‘play on words’.

However, the damage had already been done with Phillip shutting her down by saying “Dodge away as much as you like, that’s what you’re saying.”

After the interview aired, viewers of the show took to Twitter to share their disbelief at Holly and Phill’s interview approach.

One user said the pair should apologise to the woman whilst another said it was ‘unprofessional’ of them.

However other viewers agreed with the pair, tweeting their anger at the guest’s comments.
