15 signs you're growing up

Are we really adults now?

They say age is but a number, however apparently there is an age when you officially become a 'grown-up' and it isn't 18.

For years 18th and 21st birthday parties have been celebrated as the beginning of someone's adult life, however research from OneFamily, a modern mutual provider, has found that the age someone really feels 'grown-up' is much older.

In fact it isn't until people reach the age of 33 that they feel 'grown-up' and even then not everyone does. Interestingly more 19 - 25-year-olds than 41 - 50-year-olds feel 'grown-up' and even 11% of 81 - 90-year-olds don't yet feel 'grown-up'!

So what is it that makes you feel 'grown-up'? Here are 15 things that you can probably relate to.

1. You buy groceries BEFORE running out of food

No more of that panic after discovering there’s nothing in, you plan ahead these days.

2. IKEA is your idea of a day out

There’s something about that mysterious pathway that takes you deeper into the world of flat-pack furniture.

3. You go from not wanting to sleep to always wanting to sleep

Remember saying “I don’t want to go to bed!” well, that has now become “I can’t wait to get into bed!”

4. You begin to get aches

What’s happening? The odd bit of back ache and shooting pains. I’m not used to this!

5. A huge portion of photos found on your phone are either of your pet, baby or a landscape from a walk you went on

Gone are the days of taking 8 selfies and choosing the best one to put a filter on. These days your phone album consists mainly of dog photos, baby photos or pictures from a lovely walk you went on.

6. You barely run anymore

And you discover why…usually you’re in a rush. Running up the stairs almost finishes you off! Careful now.

7. At least once a week, you find yourself in a nostalgic mood

This may include talking to your friends about how the price of Freddo’s is ridiculous, watching old Disney films, talking about school or listening to old songs from years ago.

8. Staying in is no longer boring…it’s a treat

The luxury of this, you get to do nothing ALL DAY. Watch TV, read a book or do whatever you like. This is your day.

9. You’ve experienced being on hold

We’re not talking 10 minutes, we’re talking 45 minutes at least. Usually on the phone to your internet provider or telephone company.

10. A doctor’s appointment becomes the equivalent of gold dust

Why are these so hard to get? It’s like when we all had to apply for tickets to the Olympics. You may get one, but it might not be exactly what you want. Still, you’re going to go regardless.

11. You vote in EVERY election

Even the small ones. It’s your right and you’re going to use it!

12. The song from the ice cream van actually annoys you

Remember when that was the best sound in the world? Well now it isn’t, it is usually too loud and you can’t hear the TV properly. What’s happened to you?

13. You have developed a taste for coffee

It used to be the worst taste in the world. You vowed you would never like it and then all of a sudden, it’s an essential part of your life.

14. The News becomes essential viewing

No longer the boring show you would avoid, this is important viewing. “Let’s see what’s happening in the world.”

15. That new carpet smell

You know the one, these days it’s even better than chocolate.

How many of these are true of you?
