Published 18th Feb 2015

Forth News can exclusively reveal that more than 1 in 10 five year olds across Edinburgh, the Lothians and Fife are fat. These figures we have obtained for last year are the highest levels in years.

In Lothian 14.8% of Primary 1s, around 1300 youngsters, were overweight, obese or severely obese, the highest level since 2009/10.

In Fife 16.3% of Primary 1s, more than 650 youngsters, were overweight, obese or severely obese, the highest level since 2006/7.

Across Scotland, 9.2 per-cent of Primary One children were overweight last year, 3.8 per-cent were obese and 2.6 per-cent were severely obese – that’s a total of almost 8500 kids.

The Conservative deputy leader Jackson Carlaw said weight problems are becoming as big a health challenge as drinking and smoking.
