Residents in the East Craigs area of Edinburgh have been asked to keep their windows and doors shut as emergency services deal with a fire in the area.

Photos online show black smoke billowing out of a top floor flat, with fierce flames also pictured.

Fire engines have rushed to Craigmount Brae with Police officers in attendance to assist with traffic management.

A nearby school has also been evacuated as a precaution.

In a tweet Police Scotland Edinburgh advised:

"People are advised to avoid the area and local residents should keep windows and doors closed."

Posts on social media suggest the fire and rescue service have put the fire out.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "We were alerted at 3.08pm on Wednesday, 14 June to reports of a fire within a block of flats in Edinburgh.

"Operations Control mobilised 10 fire appliances plus specialist resources to the city's Craigmount Brae, where firefighters are currently working to extinguish a fire within the building's roof space."
