Edinburgh's summer festival season closed with a bang on Monday night as around 250,000 people watching a stunning firework concert in the city centre.

The sky filled with white strobing Chrysanthemum fireworks, bursting 225 metres above Edinburgh Castle as the Scottish Chamber Orchestra played the closing bars of Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique.

More than 400,000 fireworks were launched during the concert which is sponsored by Virgin Money and was broadcast live on Forth 1.

Spectacular 'Waterfall' pyrotechnics tumbled over 130 feet down the Castle Rock, lasting for around 90 seconds, featured during Dukas’ The Sorcerer’s Apprentice.

Fergus Linehan, Director of the Edinburgh International Festival said, "This year's Virgin Money Fireworks Concert was absolutely one of the best displays of its kind anywhere in the world."

Festival organisers say it was another year of record ticket sales.

More than 3 million tickets were sold for shows at the Fringe and around one quarter of them were bought by Edinburgh residents
