Rangers are hoping to strike an agreement with Heerenveen for midfielder Joey Veerman, according to reports.

The 22-year old looks to be a key target for Steven Gerrard as he aims to bolster his squad ahead of the new season.

The Glasgow Times report he is high on the priority list for the Ibrox side and any deal could be worth up to £7million.

Veerman started his career in the Dutch second division with Volendam before sealing a move to Heerenveen in 2019.

Last season he scored seven times in 31 appearances as they finished 12th in the Eredivisie.

Rangers face competition for his signature as Italian side Hellas Verona are also thought to be in the hunt for Veerman.

Reports suggested they had an initial £5million offer knocked back.

Steven Gerrard has already added numbers to his midfielder by drafting in Nnamdi Ofoborh and John Lundstram on free transfers.

Forward Fashion Sakala has also arrived this window and visited the training ground and Ibrox for the first time on Thursday.

The Ibrox side host Arsenal in a friendly on Saturday where 2,000 supporters will be allowed in the ground.
