Free things to do with the family over the school holidays in Fife

Fife has many ways to keep everyone happy

Author: Vinnie Kaur Reid

Looking ahead to the school holidays this winter, we take a look at some of the best places to visit with your nearest and dearest. With the combination of frosty weather, empty wallets and family who want to be entertained, don't let it lead to a cranky cocktail for the whole family.

Thankfully, Fife has many ways to keep everyone happy without spending so much as a leftover chocolate coin. Feast your eyes on the following frugal fun list:

East Neuk and St. Monans

The East Neuk is home to several of Fife's natural attractions making it a great choice to while away the hours without spending a bucketload of cash. With a spattering of quaint coastal villages, some highlights would be the windmill at St. Monans, the beautiful village of Crail (which hides a large secret bunker), Elie and its long sandy beach, and the stunning harbour at Anstruther.

Beveridge Park

Situated to the West of Kirkcaldy, Beveridge Park is a convenient destination being minutes from Kirkcaldy Railway Station. Whilst you stroll, you will be treated to not only flower gardens, and a tranquil pond but also a Bog garden.

Tentsmuir Forest and Reserve

Nestled in North East Fife, Tentsmuir Forest is perfect to appreciate the beauty of this area. The pine forest is home to a variety of wildlife, including red squirrels. As it is adjacent to the beach, you can catch a glimpse of the odd seal too. If you enjoy your history, this area is steeped in it, boasting one of Scotland's oldest settlements.

Ravenscraig Castle and Park

Kirkcaldy is home to the ancient castle at Ravenscraig. Built in 1460, the vast towering ruins are awe-inspiring today. With its rock-cut ditch in front, and the gun platform it was clearly a work of defence. Ravenscraig Park is a real favourite amongst Fifers and it is easy to see why. Steeped in history, shrouded in beauty, relaxing yet energetic, there is an abundance of things to do and see.

Fife Coastal Path and Wormit Beach

The Fife Coastal Path spans an incredible 117 miles, and it offers simply spectacular views. Choose to do a short casual stretch or commit to a real mince pie-burning hike.
Wormit Beach has a variety of walks to offer and is a particularly good place to get a view of the Tay Rail Bridge.

Dunfermline Carnegie Library and Galleries

If the weather is just a bit too nippy for a stroll, then head for the Dunfermline Carnegie Library. Far more than a book house, the Library and museum are bulging with history from Dunfermline's Royal past. As it was an ancient Capital of Scotland, the area is oozing with stories and the library has its own local history reading room. From the grounds of the library, there are stunning views of the Abbey.

There are many free things to do around Fife this winter, so don’t spend a load of cash, just spend a load of time with the folks you want to.

So go grab your hats, warm coats, gloves and loved ones and have fun exploring!

Happy holidays!
