We've put together a guide for fun with the family

Once you finally get Christmas all wrapped up, you start to think about the rest of the Christmas holidays. It is great to get extra time to spend with family and friends, but you don’t particularly want to pay extra to do so. After a busy month for your wallet, remember there are things to do out and about the Lothians, which don’t have to cost a single penny. Here are some of our favourites.

Linlithgow Heritage Trail

Linlithgow is steeped in history and has a great deal to offer visitors. You can enjoy the town without spending a bucketload of cash. The Heritage Trail is a fascinating tour of the key points of interest. You will also get a view of the impressive castle and canals.

Aberlady Bay and Gullane Point

Aberlady Bay is a lovely sandy beach in East Lothian. It is quiet and secluded and next to the nature reserve. It is a refreshing walk but take time to stop and spot the wildlife and birds. Gullane Point or Gullane Ness is a long stretch of sandy beach, and particularly good for dogs who want to stretch their legs.

Muiravonside Country Park

A real treat for children, Muiravonside Country Park also has something for everyone else. Located in Falkirk, you can wander round the huge 170-acre woodland, and easily while away a whole day. There is a large adventure playground for children, and a small farm area which is home to a variety of livestock and birds.

Belhaven Bay

Part of the John Muir Country Park, Belhaven Bay is an expansive sandy beach. It is ideal for a wintery walk, and the views across the Forth Estuary are a welcome distraction from the Christmas telly. You can walk along the cliff top and stroll past the ancient castle ruins.

Seacliff Beach

The beautiful unspoilt Seacliff Beach is situated near North Berwick and is a real favourite with locals. It is a perfect spot for a walk, whether it's a relaxing meander or a brisk bracing walk to work off those mince pies. From the beach there are incredible views to Tantallon Castle and Bass Rock.

Spending ‘together time’ over the festive holidays doesn’t have to cost a lot, and what better way to spend time, than wrapped up warm, getting fresh air and having fun with your family!

Happy holidays!
