Hibernian have sold Josh Doig to Hellas Verona for a significant seven-figure fee.

The 20-year old has signed for the Serie A club on a four-year deal.

Hibernian say 'the fee received is one of the highest sales in the club's history' and that the deal 'includes add-ons and a large sell-on agreement'.

Doig joined Hibs at the age of 17 and was quickly in the First Team squad.

He impressed in his breakthrough campaign, making 35 appearances, and was named the Scottish Football Writers' Association Young Player of the Year in 2021.

He made 86 appearances as a Hibee, scoring once.

Chief Executive Ben Kensell said: “I’d like to begin by thanking Josh for his time at Hibernian FC; he’s a great young man with a big future ahead of him.

“We had good but drawn-out conversations with Verona, and this led to the perfect outcome for us and for Josh.

“We have received what is a really significant fee for this football club, money that will be reinvested into the First Team squad.

“This is a great example of what we want Hibs to be; a club that gives young, talented players a platform to shine before they generate substantial fees to re-invest into the Club and the playing squad. This is how we will grow as a football club.”

Manager Lee Johnson added: “This deal highlights the great work done in the Academy and shows the pathway for our young players.

“The terms of this deal made complete sense for us. Josh is an excellent talent and I have no doubt he will go on to have a successful future.”

Doig becomes the second Scottish player to move to Serie A this week, following Lewis Ferguson's move to Bologna.

Aaron Hickey and Liam Henderson are other Scots who have featured in Italy in recent years.

Hellas Verona finished 9th in Serie A last campaign.
