'By Your Side' is out now!

Superstar DJ and music producer Calvin Harris joined Fleur East and the Saturday Breakfast team to chat about his brand-new track ‘By Your Side’ with Tom Grennan.

Calvin has now joined forces with ‘Little Bit Of Love’ singer Tom Grennan for an exciting new collab, Calvin’s first since dropping ‘Over Now’ with The Weeknd in August 2020.

Calvin explained what drew him most to a collaboration with Tom. He said: “The lad has an amazing voice. What first attracted me to him was I followed him on social media because I liked some of his tunes and he’s the most positive man that I see on the socials.

“He’s always smiling, he’s always got a positive message but not in a cheesy way. He comes across amazingly well.”

Tom is no stranger to collaborations. Earlier this year, he released a duet with pop star Ella Henderson with their track ‘Let’s Go Home Together’, which features on his second studio album ‘Evering Road’, released in March.

Scottish hitmaker Calvin has been dominating charts around the world for over a decade and has previously collaborated with the likes of Rihanna, Rag’n’Bone Man, Florence Welch, Ellie Goulding and Dua Lipa.

Calvin explained how he prefers his collaborations to be authentic and reaches out to the artists himself.

He said: “The most effective way is the DM. My favourite was the Dua Lipa one, I didn’t think she would be up for it but she was bang up for it when I did message.

“I feel like the more people you go through, the harder it is to get the reality of what’s going on in the mind of the person you’re trying to reach. It works the same with me, I don’t want people going through multiple other managers or whatever, speaking on my behalf.

“It is better to reach out to the person if you can. That’s what I did with Tom and within a week we were in the studio, which is a record for me.”

During the Covid-19 pandemic and whilst not being able to work on as much music, Calvin has been sharing his other talent… tending to his allotment!

He has posted numerous photos on Instagram proudly posing with his fresh fruit and vegetable produce, including watermelons and carrots.

He said: “I’ve got some cracking celery this year but it is too hot now for celery. In August I should have some ripe and juicy melons!”

“I’ve been into this for about four years, I was already fully in my stride before the lockdown shenanigans but it was very natural for me to step it up a bit and enjoy the earth, as we all should!”

So Calvin produces chart-toppers AND fresh food? What can’t he do?!

‘By Your Side’ with Tom Grennan is out now.

Check out some of Calvin's biggest collabs so far:

'Dance wiv Me' - Dizzee Rascal featuring Calvin Harris and Chrome, 2008

After releasing his debut album 'I Created Disco' in 2007, Calvin and Dizzee met at a festival that year. Dizzee had been a huge fan of 'Acceptable in the '80s', and the pair discussed working together. Calvin said of the collaboration, "Dizzee texted me, saying he'd done this a cappella over someone else's music, but his verse was too good for their music, so could he do it with me instead? So I spent a long time on it, to make sure it lived up to his expectations. I sent him the track, and he called me at 2 in the morning to say it was amazing, so I knew it was good."

'Bounce' - featuring Kelis, 2011

Calvin's next major collab came in the form of 2011 summer anthem 'Bounce' starring Kelis. The first single from his third album '18 Months', 'Bounce' peaked at Number 2 in the UK charts after being kept off the top spot by Example's 'Changed the Way You Kiss Me'.

The song also marked Calvin's decision to stop singing on his tracks; he said, "I'll do tracks with people who can sing well – proper artists, proper performers. I can focus on what I'm much better at, which is making music. I'm just not cut out for that role. I kind of fell into it a few years ago – the live show had to happen, I had to be the frontman because I was doing the vocals on the songs. It went all right. I spent a few years trying to get it really properly good, but it dawned on me it wasn't going to get much better. I've taken the singing thing as far as I can."

'We Found Love' - Rihanna featuring Calvin Harris, 2011

Teaming up with Rihanna for another 2011 summer banger, 'We Found Love' went to Number 1 in the UK and was certified 3X Platinum, selling over 10 million copies worldwide. Former X Factor star Leona Lewis was originally going to sing the song, but she didn't commit and it went to Rihanna instead.

Calvin said of the song, "'We Found Love,' is the most successful thing I've done ever... It's not strictly a song by me, obviously, it's by Rihanna. She sings it...It was great to work with her... No one could have taken it as far as she did. You can't escape it in America. I've heard it a lot. I've heard it probably more times today than I did when I was mixing it. Which is a good thing."

He said, "With Florence, she was really busy at that time. She was in the middle of a tour and she had like three days to record something, so I wasn't there, anything could've come back. I didn't think she'd do it. She seemed a really unattainable artist to reach for. I think she would've done it if the song was right and the people were right and it was all at the right time."
