Police forces across the UK have issued statements warning people to “be alert” in the face of scams as fraudsters take advantage of vulnerable people waiting to receive the Covid-19 vaccine.

Criminals are using fake NHS texts and cold calls asking people to apply for a vaccination by entering personal information and bank details.

One scam text currently circulating reads: “We have identified that you are eligible to apply for your vaccine.” It then encourages people to click on a hyperlink to a convincing fake application form, where they ask for credit card numbers amongst other information.

Hackney police tweeted a warning against such scams: “Please be alert around scam text messages/cold calls telling you that you are eligible for a Covid vaccine, do not provide your payment details or any personal details in links attached. When your GP contacts you about the vaccine, they will not ask for payment!”

The Devon and Cornwall police cyber protect unit also asked people to remain vigilent:

Elderly people are thought to be particularly vulnerable to these scams, with many waiting to receive their vaccination in the coming weeks.

MP Neil O'Brien urged people to warn elderly neighbours and relatives who may not be on social media and therefore unaware of the hoax.

Meanwhile, Sussex Community NHS Trust have issued a reminder that the vaccine is only available via the NHS and no other services can currently provide the jab.

It also states that the NHS will never ask patients to send a text or press a button to confirm they want the vaccine, nor will it ever ask for payment or bank details.
