What's being dubbed as Scotland's biggest snowball fight erupted in Aberdeenshire on Tuesday evening with hundreds of people in attendance.

The fun fight took place in Inverurie's Strathburn Park as most of Scotland is currently experiencing a spell of wintry weather.

However, locals used the snowy conditions to their advantage and geared up for battle in what is hoped to be Scotland's largest snowball fight on record.

Organisers claimed on social media around 300 people turned up to the event.

The idea started as a joke when one of the organisers, Scott Miskelly, got home from work on Monday evening when his wife, Roxanna, suggested a snowball fight in the park.

Just 24 hours later, scores of people turned up to take part in the fun.

Scott said: "I got home from work and Rox said 'let's have a snowball fight in the park' and I put it on Inverurie Residents.

"This happened last night, not quite as big numbers, then Wray got involved and it's just gone crazy."

The couple's friend, Wray Thomson, posted on social media urging people to don their hats and gloves for the occasion.

Garioch Sports Centre turned on the flood lights as everyone began to show up.

The pair said - depending on the weather - they hope to make it an annual event.

Roxanna said: "It's been amazing - it started from a kind of half-baked idea of 'wouldn't it be funny' and then 24 hours later, to potentially having Scotland's biggest snowball fight is unreal and it's been such a good atmosphere.

"As long as it snows - definitely an annual thing.

"The sports centre has been great for putting us up and giving us our lights and space, opening themselves up for coffees and toilets and things - it's been absolutely fantastic."

The large crowd was split into two teams and given three minutes to prepare their snowballs before charging at each other to the sound of dramatic music.

Inverurie locals hailed it as a great display of community spirit.

Karla was one of them, she said: "It kind of lets you relive your youth a little bit.

"Us adults don't get to have this much fun and it's just something really wholesome that brings the community together."

It's unknown who currently holds the record for the biggest snowball fight in Scotland.
