Huge fire breaks out at recycling centre in Kilwinning

People have been evacuated from their homes overnight after a huge fire at a battery recycling centre in Kilwinning.
Neighbours reported loud bangs like fireworks and thick plumes of black smoke billowing from the Fenix Battery Recycling site on Byrehill Place.
The road remains shut while emergency services tackle the blaze.
Those nearby are being advised to stay indoors and keep windows shut.
There are no reports of anyone being hurt.
A statement from Fenix Battery Recycling said: "Fenix Battery Recycling (FBR) has been alerted to a fire at our Kilwinning recycling facility.
"Our facility's fire alarm system immediately notified our response team.
"Upon their arrival, our team swiftly assessed the situation, adhering to our established fire safety protocols, and promptly contacted local emergency services, who we extend our gratitude to for their prompt and professional handling of this incident.
"The situation remains ongoing, and FBR is actively collaborating with all stakeholders and emergency services to manage the incident effectively while prioritising the health and safety of both people and the environment.
"While the cause of the fire is still under investigation, we are fully cooperating with the authorities by providing all necessary information and support and Fenix Battery Recycling will continue to liaise closely with emergency services, regulatory bodies, and local authorities throughout the ongoing incident.
"Our foremost concern at this time is the wellbeing of our staff and the local community. A comprehensive update will be provided in due course."
