Roads, trains and airports are facing a busy bank holiday weekends, as residents across Buckinghamshire Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire set off for their weekend getaway.

While motorists are being warned to expect long delays on the roads, a total of 8,486 flights are scheduled to depart between Saturday and Monday.

Rail operators will be facing busy journeys paired with heavy disruption from Monday as members of the union Aslef will be walking out in a row over pay with an overtime ban in place until Saturday the 11th.

Matt Turner from Chiltern Railways said: "Alongside industrial action affecting the Bank Holiday Monday, the West Coast main line between Birmingham New Street and London, Houston will be closed for engineering works all weekend."

"So what that means is that Chiltern is the only option for those travelling from Birmingham towards London across the bank holiday, so we've lengthened trains where we can."

While trains will be busy across the network, Chiltern Railways will see disruption caused by HS2 works in South Buckinghamshire, while more journeys are expected on Sunday due to a game at Wembley.

Mr Turner said: "Due to HS2 engineering works, there won't be a service on our Metropolitan line route via Amersham on Saturday or Sunday, so we've got rail replacement buses connecting stations to Beaconsfield for trains into London."

"The second thing to know is that there's actually a football match at Wembley Stadium on the Sunday, so along with all of the other engineering works happening, that means much busier journeys on the morning and the evening of the bank holiday Sunday."

What is the advice to avoid long waits?

Drivers wanting to avoid heavy congestion are being urged to travel before 9am or after 5pm throughout the bank holiday weekend.

Meanwhile rail passengers are being urged to check their journeys in advance to avoid busy times on the trains.
