A huge £40,000 has been donated by one person to the appeal for a new MRI scanner for Buckinghamshire's hospitals.

But charity Scannappeal say we need to help make up the remaining £40k, for that donation to become a reality.

Once the £1.5 million target is hit, the second of the new scanners can be installed.

Why are the scanners needed?

  • 22,000 MRI scans are carried out at Stoke Mandeville and Wycombe hospitals each year
  • Bucks will be the first in the UK to have scanners of this kind
  • Demand for MRI scanning is rising by and estimated 13% per year
  • The scanners will deliver advanced whole body imaging
  • State of the art imaging techniques for stroke, cardiac, breast, brain and spine patients
  • Improved patient experience due to sound, size and speed of the scanner

A challenge to all of us

The incredibly generous pledge has been offered on a match funding basis meaning every subsequent donation will be doubled.

With this in mind, Scannappeal are appealing to supporters to help them pass the finish line and provide the very latest MRI scanning technology within Bucks NHS hospitals.

The first of two scanners was installed at Wycombe hospital in January 2020.

Dr Richard Hughes, Clinical Lead BHT Radiology Head said:

"It was very timely that under the difficult conditions caused by COVID-19 we were able to move out of the mobile scanner and into our brand new scanning suite in the hospital.

"We send our sincere thanks to everyone who played a part in enabling this to happen".

Stoke Mandeville Hospital

Scannappeal is aware that it is a very difficult time for many individuals, families and businesses right now but they are hopeful to secure the last £40,000 to ensure that our local hospitals have the very best scanning facilities available to them at a time when they need it most.

Lisa Trivett, Director of Scannappeal, said:

"The first MRI scanner at Wycombe hospital has made a significant difference not only to the hospital but also to the patient experience.

"We know that the scanner is more comfortable for patients as it is bigger, much quieter and importantly a lot quicker.

"We have been overwhelmed by the generosity of our supporters to get us this far and I now appeal to the wider community to help us complete the appeal and deliver the second MRI scanner to Stoke Mandeville Hospital within the next few months".

Every £1 donated to the appeal will be automatically doubled and if donors are able to gift aid their donation the charity will receive an additional 25p, meaning £1 becomes £2.25.
