A High Wycombe man has been sent to prison for driving offences.

23 year-old Saqib Mohammed Jawaid, of Deeds Grove, was given a prison sentence of a year and two months at Aylesbury Crown Court on Saturday.

He was also given a driving ban of two years and seven months.

At around 11.40pm on 1 June, officers spotted a black Mercedes A Class speeding on Gore Hill, Amersham, while on patrol in an unmarked vehicle. The officers caught up with the vehicle on London Road West and attempted to stop it. The Mercedes then accelerated away and the officers pursued it.

The car hit speeds of 100mph in a 50mph limit area and 80mph in a 30mph limit area. It also went through red traffic lights, contravening ‘keep left’ signs and drove around roundabouts in the wrong direction.

The Mercedes narrowly missed a bystander at one point by going down the wrong side of a traffic island by Tesco on Amersham Road in High Wycombe. To avoid the collision, it had to mount the traffic island, damaging the vehicle.

After around nine minutes, the Mercedes started to smoke and spark. Jawaid was arrested by officers on Cryers Hill Road.

He was found to be already disqualified from driving for a previous offence. He also only had a provisional licence and was driving without insurance.

PC Martin Woodford, of the Joint Operations Roads Policing Unit, based at Amersham police station, said: “The drive that Jawaid took that night should have taken 19 minutes and he completed it in nine minutes.

“It was clear to see Jawaid was willing to take needless risks and in doing so put other road users at risk of serious harm by driving so dangerously.

“The sentence issued by the court is a reflection of this.

“We will robustly target offenders who drive dangerously and while disqualified to keep the public safe on the roads.

“And those people who commit these offences will be put before the courts and brought to justice.”
