Women are being celebrated today (March 8) for International Women's Day, with schools across Bucks Beds and Herts teaching students about inspirational women.

High March School in Beaconsfield is one of them, with special assemblies, lessons, and activities being organised to talk about women's history.

Greatest Hits Radio spoke to a few of the pupils at the school, who described their female role models from famous singers to their mums.

"...there are so many women who are really inspirational, everyone would probably look up to them."

Alicia, 11, said: "Taylor Swift because at the beginning, she was owned by a record company and they were taking all the credit for her music and then she stood up for herself."

Meanwhile Annabel, 11, said: "My mum does voluntary work and helps other people who are struggling, so I think that's really good."

The girls gave us an insight into what they learn about, including women's fight for equality.

Olivia, who's 10 years old, said: "Girls and women have always been something to aspire to, something to be really happy that you're a girl because there are so many women who are really inspirational, everyone would probably look up to them."

"The women worked really really hard and they finally got to vote."

The school regularly invites guest speakers to talk to students about their jobs, careers, struggles, but mainly successes, to inspire the girls to follow the path they wish to.

"We've been specifically looking at the legacy of the Suffragettes Movement and how women had to fight for their rights."

Alongside the events the school puts on, it is important for teachers to also be an inspiration for the girls, a role model, and a guide.

Sharon Walker, Deputy Head at High March School, said: "I think it's really important that we have a rounded curriculum, that the girls are exposed to inspiring women and their roles, and their achievements."

"We've been specifically looking at the legacy of the Suffragettes Movement and how women had to fight for their rights."

This year's International Women's Day theme was investing in women and accelerating progress, which is what today was all about at High March School.
